A History Of Kefalonia

One of the largest Greek Islands which is also one of the largest Ionian Islands is Kefalonia found on the west side of the Greek mainland . Kefalonia can be spelt in many different ways and some of these ways include Cephallonia, Kefallonia and Cephalonia. According to popular belief it is said to be named after Cephalus, a character from Greek Mythology and was the son of Hermes and Herse.

Kefalonia is an aesthetically pleasing island with mountain ranges, deep caves and vegetation. It is also deep in history. The island went under many various rulings from Roman, Norman and English ownership and was only unified with Greece in 1864 along with the other Ionian Islands.

In 1953 the Island would change forever, in looks and in population when a series of disastrous earthquakes hit the island, one of them hitting 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake damaged a vast number of buildings and resulted in millions of pounds in damages, and it is said that of the 125,000 that inhabit the island 100,000 left to seek a better life elsewhere. There are remarkable signs still on the island such as ruined buildings that have been left untouched as a monument to the 1953 disaster.

As one of the larger Greek islands Kefalonia gets plenty of visitors each year during peak periods mainly of English and Italian holidaymakers as these are both nearby and this has been improved since Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was released on the big screen in 2001, where Kefalonia played host to its location.

Most tourists tend to visit location such as Lassi for their holiday or getaway due to its lively ambience that is ideal for all kinds of holidaymakers. With restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets lining both sides of the main coastal road so you won’t get bored. With unusual rocky cliffs and stunning fishing harbours Kefalonia is a great place for those who want scenery and relaxation on their holidays . If you are engrossed in exploring the island, there are many boat trips and cruises that can take you to significant hotspots and places of interest. So whether you want check out the rock formations, sunbath out in the open sea or anchor up on a secluded beach you can hire your own motor boat for the day to do just that.
