Can You Quadruple Your eBay Profits Today?

By: Scott Memmott

I'm going to outline a little known technique that can double your eBay sales. This tactic is so simple. However, only a handful of eBay marketers employ it, in spite of the fact that it takes so little work. So, what is this insider strategy?

Backend Sales!

Allow me to show you an example of a technique I used. I noted there were a lot of eBay marketers that were selling large batches of greeting cards. Remarkably, when I first looked into it, there was a batch of 1,000 cards available, with only 2 days remaining in the auction. Can you guess what the high bid was?

One Dollar!

Can you believe it? The winning bid went a little higher, but not by much. When the auction closed, the winning bidder got 1,000 greeting cards for under a penny a piece.

There are quite a few eBay marketers who routinely sell batches of twenty-five greeting cards for $5.00 or even more. What kind of a profit could you make if you purchased one thousand cards for one dollar and then went back and sold them for $5.00 per set of twenty-five cards? $200.00, which is a 20,000% profit! Pretty darn good.

By the way, there are bargains comparable to that all the time on eBay. You can find many of them by performing some simple eBay market research.

But, this article is not about uncovering low priced items on eBay and selling them for a good return. That will be the subject of a future article. So now, back to backend sales (no pun intended).

These gigantic batches of greeting cards become available for sale on eBay regularly. So, I resolved to use them as a backend sale product. Here's how I went about it.

I bought a large batch of cards for about two cents a piece. I then put together an order form to sell the cards twenty cents each (you can always raise the price later). Every time I sent something I sold on one of my auctions, I just included a sample card & envelope with an order form.

When my customer (high bidder) got their purchase, they were surprised and pleased to discover that I had included a complimentary card that they could use (nice little gift). In addition, they were able to see that they could order more high-quality cards, for only twenty cents each, in lots of twenty-five. Since most cards normally sell for $2.00 to $3.00 a piece, that represented a discount of greater than 90%. That's a pretty attractive deal.

The beauty of this method is that anybody who ever purchases something from me can become a lifetime customer. They might buy cards from me for many years. My first "one-time" sale to my customer can become a lifetime profit stream, as they reorder greeting cards over and over.

You can do the same thing. The only thing you need to accomplish is source a consumable product that people buy, use up and buy again. Purchase the product on eBay for cents on the dollar, or through a quality discount product source. Set up an order form that you can enclose sales. Then, kick back and let the money roll in. Cool!

Don't forget, your backend products don't have to be greeting cards. That is just an instance of something I happened to observe. You may find other fantastic consumable products that are a closer match for the type of items you usually auction on eBay. What you really want is to find products that people will purchase again and again.

To summarize, backend sales is just the act of selling more products to customers who recently bought something from you. The most favorable time to approach a potential lifetime customer is when they are already happy with a recent purchase and they are in the "buying mood."

Don't forget, the perfect backend product should be consumable. At the time you get a new customer, you will want to offer him another product that he will need to reorder from you each time he uses up his supply. This will create lifetime customers that can be the basis for a perpetual revenue stream for you.
