GTA 4 PS3 Review

By: Jon Asslexiaha

Since the launching of the first Grand Theft Auto title, it has continued to reap success with its succeeding games and is recognized as one of the most popular gaming franchises in the industry. Plus, Grand Theft Auto has continued to step up a notch with each title released and redefining what video gaming is about. GTA certainly takes the lead in terms of the Sandbox genre, and everyone who has played it knows the reason for this. The ninth installment off the series, GTA 4 ties together the loose ends of the story that was unveiled in GTA 3. But if you thought you know how the story will unfold, wait till you get to play this game as the series has been known to provide some interesting twists and turns with each game.

A common denominator among every GTA story has been that it is, to a certain extent, highly absorbing and out of this world. But GTA 4 provides a different perspective into the game's storyline. In this game, players will get to immerse in the persona of Niko Bellic, who is a former soldier wanting to escape a troubled past, not knowing that more trouble await him in Liberty City. Niko does not have trouble fitting in because of his rugged and rough appearance, and here is where all the fun of exploring Liberty City starts. But unlike previous GTA characters, Niko has specific objectives to achieve and giving more weight into the overall gameplay experience. If in previous GTA games you have engaged yourself in mindless rampages, with Niko you have to remain focused on the objective at hand and remain true to that.

With Niko being the main focus of the story, this does not mean though that the other characters present in GTA 4 have no significance in the overall gameplay and storyline. When Niko makes certain decisions, he will be forced to put into consideration certain characters and how that decision will be beneficial (or not) to him later on in the game. Meanwhile, building relationships is a key in this game and unlike other GTA games, you will have to think them through.

With Liberty City serving as the backdrop for the game, it should be pointed out that the game could have not looked any better. Not only will you have access to various locations within the game, but everything looked like much effort has been rendered in order to achieve such perfection in details.

But that is just a preview of what GTA IV is really about. Learning from lapses or areas where previous GTA games went lacking, Rockstar has incorporated some new elements into this new game. One feature that probably seen the most improvement in this one is the combat system. Rockstar decided to improve on this in order to infuse more sophistication and excitement into the combat of this game, as well as to be at par with some of today's best shooters. Although the free-aim feature might be a great way to practice your shooting skills, the lock-on feature still serves as a welcome addition for a sharper accuracy rate. By setting your aim on an opponent and locking on to them, not one bullet will now go to waste. And once you've done that, there's nothing more left to do but press that button. There is also a new cover system in this game. You can make your character go behind or take cover from the nearest object by pressing on R1. It is recommended to use this feature when confronted with multiple enemies and you would be able to effectively shield yourself from any possible attack. By using this new feature, your character can now attain only minimal damage to his health. With this new combat system in your arsenal, playing in GTA IV has become a much more rewarding experience.

If that sounds impressive, then GTA IV's all-new in-car combat system will further heighten the thrill that comes with this game. Given that you already have all these nifty features at your disposal, you can be rest assured that this new in-car combat system is just as effective as on-foot combat system. While driving a car, it is now possible for players to lock on the nearest target. You still have the option for a free-aim though, it's basically your choice. If before, getting to shoot someone while you're driving proved to be quite a task, this time around everything is so much better. All these features are aimed at continuing with the reputation of GTA over the years, and that is providing good, quality in-game combat.

It is important to touch on the mission structure for GTA IV because it is one of the pillars of this particular game. With GTA's reputation as a truly one of a kind game, GTA IV has managed to make use of effective elements and incorporated some fresh new twists into it. So, as you go through this game, you'd have to traverse the entire city in order to accomplish missions for certain characters, with each of these missions offering a unique experience for gamers. And with that being said, it's safe to assume that this is probably the best and most explosive release off the series yet.

While in Liberty City, Roman's phone will be used by Niko and plays a key role in the game. This will serve as your control panel and will be a valuable tool for whatever that needs to be done in the game. But more importantly, your phone enables you to receive messages about oncoming missions, it lets you control Niko's life, as well as gain access to multiplayer features, and many other things that enable you to move forward in the game. Using the phone as a means of control for players on the characters in the game is a smart way to guise the illusion of the players having complete control of the action taking place in the game.

The online multiplayer feature is another exciting addition to an already packed gaming experience. This will enable you to share the wonderful experience of playing GTA IV with 15 other players and this will alter the way you have anticipated GTA IV to be. But GTA IV is determined to reign supreme among those considered epic games (like Call of Duty 4 and Rainbow Six Vegas) as the king of Multiplayer by infusing some more unique game modes.
