How to Select a Good Directory to Submit Your New Web Site?

One way links and search engine rankings have a great cause and effect relationship. Think of it as a business referral system. The business with the more referrals is most popular and hence, search engines rank them higher. The reason behind it, as many put it, is that the more links you have, higher are the chances of a visitor coming to your site through these links! The search engines send out spiders to the links they find in the directory pages. This will bring the search engine spiders to your site and will get your site pages added to the search engines indexes automatically. In future, the new search engines will also follow the same procedure. Hence, you won’t have to register to them; rather they will find you themselves! Many people actually do surf these directories to look for the things they want. So they will also act as a medium to bring in your prospective customer to your site.

Finding Good Directories:

1. Are Category Pages Indexed?
To be more specific, is the category page you wish to be listed in indexed in Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask? If the category page that you wish to be listed in is not indexed in Google or other search engines, then the page has no power to improve your site's link popularity. Because Google does not know about it, it cannot recognize that it is linking to you.

2. How Many Sites Are You Sharing the Link Juice Wealth With?
In most cases, an interior directory category page will contain ten listings - maybe twenty at the most. If any page has 100 links this means this page is sharing its value with 100 sites. Less links on the pages means more value your will get.

3. Does the Directory Add the NOFOLLOW Attribute To Its Listings?
If you are submitting to a directory to help improve your site's link popularity and they are adding the nofollow attribute to outgoing links, it is not going to help you. Unless you are expecting to get some traffic from the directory, avoid it.

4. Will the Directory Send You Any Traffic?
Most directories that are of a general nature do not send any significant amount of traffic. This is due to the fact that very few people actually use them. A couple of exceptions might be in case of Yahoo directory.

5. Directory Age.
Age of the directory is also an important this to check. Most of the new directories die after few months. An old directory can give you more value.
Link building through submission to web directories, it's an important part of the overall link building mix. Getting more and more one way text links through directory submissions is an effective way to build your link popularity. Whether you are looking to do a free directory submission or are willing to pay for the top web directories on the internet. One way links seemed to be more powerful because that most likely meant that one website was linking to another because they wanted the visitors to their site to know about the website they were linking to. It was a unbiased "vote" for that website. There is debate on whether one way text links are more important now than reciprocal links but in my opinion, I would say they are more important to search engines.
