    Salmonella is a common food-borne illness and that causes a condition known as salmonellosis. It occurs after consuming a contaminated food item -- anything that is derived from an animal including meat and dairy. It is uncommon for salmonella to thrive in a high-fat, low-moisture environment such as peanut butter, which may have made the recent salmonella problem much worse as it came as a surprise.
