Adsense Policies and StumbleUpon Bribes

I try to avoid "update" type posts in general but there have been a few changes here that I wanted to mention to readers.

Firstly, following Josh Spaulding's post regarding Adsense Rules and Policies you will notice that the blog now contains a clear link to my privacy policy - thanks for the heads up Josh! If you have an Adsense account I suggest you go and run an eye over what Josh had to say.

Others may also like to refer to an older post of my own regarding Google Adsense Policies and another guideline that is still being broken by thousands of Adsense Publishers who are heading for imminent Google account suspension.

Secondly, in the face of increasing spam I have altered my contact system and installed a basic help desk system. Nothing fancy, but hopefully it will stop the harvesting bots.

Thirdly, you might have noticed the big Stumbleupon logo in the sidebar just below my RSS feed. I'm testing a script that offers SU users a free gift (in this case a copy of the excellent Cloaker Buzz software) in return for Stumbles. If you Stumble two pages from my domain, you will be given access to the download. I will be changing the gift on offer from time to time, so for two Stumbles, it's a pretty cool offer.

If you like the idea of free marketing software, scripts and ebooks, you might want to consider joining my newsletter that often includes goodies to help my readers with their marketing efforts and they will always go to my subscribers first.

You can do so by grabbing any of the free gifts at the following URL's

Google Page Rank Rumours Abound

For a long time I've been of the opinion that Google's Page Rank had turned around and bitten them. It's not that it was a bad idea per se, just that it was surely obvious that people would find ways to subvert it. After the "NoFollow" attribute was introduced, the signs were there that Google was fighting a rear guard action in an attempt to recover some sort of credibility for the system.

Rumours are now rife that page rank, at least in its present form, will soon be no more.  Over at CashQuests they have gone as far as publishing  their opinion that Page Rank Is Already Dead. Linkbait or genuine concerns?

Whatever the truth, I think the long silence on updated page rank speaks volumes. If it really is the death knell for the familiar old "friend" of SEO'ers and webmasters everywhere, it will be interesting to see how Google move forward. I think whatever they do is certainly long overdue, and hopefully whatever moves may or may not be afoot will be positive and beneficial for searchers and webmasters. I think a lot of people are waiting with baited breath..........

Alexa Is Seriously Flawed

But, things are set to change, and hopefully for the better.

Alexa rankings are considered quite authoritative when it comes to judging a sites popularity, particularly by advertisers, which is interesting for a number of reasons. Until recently, the Alexa Toolbar was only available for Internet Explorer users, which meant that only visitors using Microsoft's browser in conjunction with the Alexa toolbar counted towards a site's traffic statistics. As we all know, Firefox has steadily gained ground on the IE army, to the point where it's use is as widespread as the previous king of the browser jungle, if not more amongst savvy web users. My own statistics certainly reflect far more Firefox users than IE and I am certainly not alone in this.

Life Before and After Google

I came across an interesting blog post today about one man's experiment to see if he could live without Google. I suppose I should clarify that because on the face of it makes the writer sound more than a little sad, but it is actually a quite thought provoking piece and not for once a Google bashing rant. You can read about Jimmy's Life Without Google here.

I remember when I first went online with my 14.4K modem and a service provider who charged a monthly fee and call charges from my phone services at some ridiculous rate per minute. Ah, those were the days......
