29/08: Affiliate Data Feeds Made Simpler

If you are involved in affiliate marketing you've no doubt heard of data feeds, and might even have looked into using them on your own sites.

I'll be up front and admit that I'm certainly no expert, and that data feeds seem like a great idea until you realize that it's not that easy to use them without some technical know how. There are many helpful resources explaining what they are and how to use them and these are very helpful for some people, but very intimidating for others with for example, little PHP and SQL experience.

Some of the best articles and guides on affiliate data feeds are to be found at Carsten Cumbrowski's website, together with a lengthy list of useful resources and I would highly recommend this site as your first port of call. If you don't want to wade through all the links there just yet, bookmark his site and read on for a couple of quick and simple data feed tools that anyone can use, free of charge.

For beginners and those who don't want to spend money up front, one of the simplest ways to start using data feeds is via the web based application provided by FeedProcessor.com which will enable you to process and use data feeds in various ways, including converting them to RSS or building site templates from scratch. There are of course plenty of paid services, scripts and software out there that will do these things and more, but if you're just wanting to dip a toe in the water, this free web app is a winner.

I should also mention the excellent PopShops which is also free and enables anyone to build affiliate storefronts to add to existing websites with their simple point and click interface. They have a very user friendly and attractive Web 2.0 layout which makes the site even more appealing. This is also highly recommended and even the pro versions are great value if you decide to start building more substantial affiliate based websites.

This post is affiliate link free - enjoy the free tools without making anyone richer but yourself!

Since writing this post I unwittingly spawned another discussion on affiliate data feeds at the 5Star Affiliate forums to which the eminent Carsten Cumbrowski has added some very useful comments, so I thought it would be beneficial to include another link here.

Hi Maurice (is that your real name?),

I hope that you know now what options you have and what it takes to work with feeds. I see that you discovered PopShops, which is well designed and much easier to work with than raw data feeds. It is also sufficient for most applications of product data.

Thanks for the praise and also thank you for showing me that there is some need to write something up for people who are completely new to this to get an understanding about what it takes to work with raw feeds and what the options and problems are. It's on my to do list :)

Cheers!

Hi Carsten

Yes sir, that certainly is my real name - or it was the last time I looked :-) Usually folks just call me Mo.

Thank you for all the help you gave after my mention of your site on the forums and for dropping by here and leaving your comments. Data Feeds have always been a nightmare for the non technical like me, but as you say, with tools like PopShops they have become far more accessible to mere mortals.

Your site was a goldmine in my search for knowledge however - highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject.

Hey Mo,

I have to clarify something to make sure that people who read this don't get the impression that I only answered your questions, because you linked to my site hehe.

Larwee from 5star forums sent me a personal email about the thread, because he knows that I am interested in the subject and that I also know a thing or two about it. I then discovered that you referred to my site what I did and do appreciate :)

... and Larwee wants me to be more active at the forum and sends me a mail every couple months to say "Hi" hehe.

I like to help people and don't keep information a secret that shouldn't be kept a secret to begin with. Some people are at times a bit overly competitive. That's the whole reason why I transformed my old family website to the resource site it is today. I used to be a paragraph on my "about" page and grew from there.

My family website is live and kicking. We also have the Cumbrowski.de domain which used to redirect to Cumbrowski.com. It became its own site when I transformed Cumbrowski.com. Other stuff from the old family website became RoySAC.com which started out as a single page as well :)

Just FYI ... hehe.. Cheers!

Hi Carsten,

Sorry, I approved this comment and neglected to reply, then got caught up in other things!

As if anyone would think such a thing ;-) Besides, it was my pleasure to give a little link love.

Oh, and whilst you were too modest to link to your other sites, I'll point people to your Bumpzee profile should folks want to know more about your other blogs.

How's that :-)
