25/07: Alexa Is Seriously Flawed

But, things are set to change, and hopefully for the better.

Alexa rankings are considered quite authoritative when it comes to judging a sites popularity, particularly by advertisers, which is interesting for a number of reasons. Until recently, the Alexa Toolbar was only available for Internet Explorer users, which meant that only visitors using Microsoft's browser in conjunction with the Alexa toolbar counted towards a site's traffic statistics. As we all know, Firefox has steadily gained ground on the IE army, to the point where it's use is as widespread as the previous king of the browser jungle, if not more amongst savvy web users. My own statistics certainly reflect far more Firefox users than IE and I am certainly not alone in this.

It is impossible to know just how many IE users have the toolbar installed, but it is probably not a very high percentage. With Firefox users now able to install the toolbar Alexa's data is going to become far more accurate and will hopefully create a much better representation of a site’s traffic.  It's probably fair to say that only around 10 percent of a  site's visitors were ever taken into account until now,  and that is probably overly generous. In other words, for every 10 unique visits to a site you were more likely seeing around one according to Alexa.

Increased accuracy and relevance is good news and it will probably mean that existing rankings will be changing interestingly in the months ahead. Some will no doubt suffer and others will improve. Many sites who performed poorly in the past may well see positive upward movement if they have not previously attracted typical IE and Alexa users.

What will all this mean for you and your blog? Well, who really knows? If you are a Firefox user and don't have Alexa installed yet, go and get yourself a copy of the Alexa toolbar and start contributing to a far better ranking system. I run the toolbar and it sits, barely noticeable in the bottom right hand corner of the browser. If you know that a lot of your visitors use Firefox, then the more of them who install Sparky - the Alexa Toolbar for Firefox, the better for your site's health in the rankings, increasing your real estate's value! If you're disappointed in your site's current performance on Alexa, spread the word and you might well see some positive changes.

If you have no idea what your Alexa ranking is, pop over to SmartPageRank.com which will give you all manner of interesting data about your site(s) at the touch of a button. Cool.

I definitely saw flaws upon trying to use it.

@sir jorge

I'm not sure what you are trying to convey here - did you have problems with installing the toolbar or just feel that the system delivers erroneous data?

It does of course which was the point of my post, but if you found the toolbar problematical please share your experiences with it.

You are right.
Alexa is very flawed.
Until IE and Firefox combine to make
Mozilla Explorer and everyone has the Alexa toolbar on, then it will be correct.

Hi, I'm reading via the Bumpzee No Nofollow | I Follow | DoFollow Community RSS feed. :)

I agree that there are some flaws, however, I think that if you put the Alexa widget on your sites, it will help somewhat. However, I still feel it's quite ridiculous for sites to put such an emphasis on one ranking for advertising and other things they might control.

@Stephan The idea of one browser for all LOL. Not sure I'd want that but your point is taken. Unless all internet users are running the Alexa toolbar its figures will always be skewed.

@Sephyroth, Hi and a warm welcome :-) As you say, it's amazing that such relevance is attached to Alexa. I don't use their widget at the moment (this domain's ranking is still low so why advertise it :-), but I think it's important for anyone interested in improving the accuracy of both their own ranking and the system as a whole, to install and surf with the toolbar. Firefox users can have a meaningful impact long term if they choose to do this.

Like it or not, the better your rank, the more valuable your web real estate.

I've got Sparky running on Firefox, but as said above, unless everyone has it (and on every browser) it is very flawed. Still as you point out, we should worry about it as a high ranking is important to some advertisers.

Also, thanks for the link to SmartPageRank.com. I hadn't seen that before and it's quite interesting (not sure about useful, but definitely interesting!).
