05/05: Blog Comment Spam (Again)

I've not been posting in the last few weeks for a variety of reasons but I needed to say something about blog comment spam and the dofollow status of this blog.

It's not often that you find yourself thanking a pathetic spammer but on this occasion one such individual did do me a favor.

He or she has been posting countless spam comments using the same IP and email addresses despite my attempts to block all comments from said IP. Today I log on to find a slew of offensive and identical comments the person had tried to post to my web hosting directory. The individual in question, and I hope you are reading this post, is obviously a moron and has not yet figured out that spamming blogs is a fruitless and damaging exercise, particularly on blogs that have comment moderation turned on.

I am glad that they decided to post on one of my Wordpress sites, giving me the opportunity to send all of them to Akismet, which, unfortunately I cannot do on this NucleusCMS blog.

Again, if you are reading, pea brain, you are now officially a spammer and Akismet will send your nonsense straight to the spam filter of any Wordpress blogs you decide to comment on in future. Way to go eh? You dummy.

However, I do need to thank you for pointing out that the comments on this blog had somehow reverted to nofollow, something I was unaware of until your vitriol landed in my inbox. It turns out that the plugin for Nucleus had ceased to work after updating my installation of the platform. It has now been fixed with a bit of manual coding, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

A polite email via my contact form would have been preferrable but you are obviously ignorant as well as stupid.

Anyway, apologies to my genuine commenters, your link love has been restored and I apologize for the error.

For the idiot spammer may I refer you to the following posts on this blog. Maybe you will learn something. If a blog has a comment policy, try reading it and if you want to participate here rather than try to use it as a link directory to your low rent sites, all you have to do is follow the suggestions right above the comment box. It ain't rocket science.

Hi

I'm not sure why people still do it. Does any of this rubbish ever get past moderation/spam filters? I can see why it would be annoying if you were having to deal with a lot of it. My blog doesn't have enough traffic yet for the level of spam to be a real nuisance.

I think it's a great shame that some people are mislead into going down the spam route. The real benefits and pleasure in blog commenting is in the social interaction and possible networking opportunities on offer. Plus the chance to get some direct traffic back to your site if people like your comments. Even on a dofollow blog the power of the link back is probably quite low.

Anyway, good luck with your battle with the spammers!

Hi Neil,

I agree with everything you say, but that's not the only reason I like to receive comments like yours.

Comments should contribute something and make blogs what they are - a two way street. I have been with the dofollow movement from the outset because I think it's only fair that people who bother to enter into dialogue on my blog deserve what little link love I can pass to them.

Sadly, despite all the advice out there to the contrary, there are still so many people who think that adding meaningless one liners to blogs and using keywords as anchor text will rocket their sites to the top of the SERPS and make them millions of dollars.

As long as there are people willing to believe in something, people will find ways to sell it to them. Some things never change :-)

I think professional spammers have to be given their due - to them it's just a business and ethical concerns faze them not one bit (still hate their methods but if it didn't work they wouldn't do it) but idiots like this latest fool who sends expletive filled hate comments to one of my other sites and accuses me of running splogs etc etc are just a great example of the fact that the gene pool doesn't have a life guard.

He must have filled in at least 6 captchas to post his crap but still couldn't seem to read or grasp that all comments are moderated, or reason that I would be unlikely to publish them, containing as they did all the name calling, lies and total nonsense. Gotta laugh really.

Man those spam-comments are really sad and devaluating a lot of good blogs. Let's be happy with plug-ins like Akismet to keep the quality of the internet up. Nice contribution, like your blog.
Grtz.
