31/10: Free Alternatives To Google Analytics

A short while ago in my quest for less reliance on Google, I removed Google Analytics from my sites. I should add that it is a great tool, if a little in depth for more average users, but like others, I’m beginning to feel that the big G have their fingers in too many pies, and their dominance might not be in the best interests of webmasters and bloggers.

Despite not wanting to spend too much time poring over statistics, once you’ve had them, it’s easy to miss them, and so I set about trawling the web for a viable and equivalent service. As a result, I think I’ve found one, which although still in Beta, is free and provides almost as much data as Google.

Introducing another Free Web Analytics Service

myrt

The program in question is called MyRT and I signed up and installed their tracking code yesterday. The early signs are good, loading times are not adversely affected and the presentation of web stats is clear and easy to interpret. So far, it is looking like a very worthy alternative. If you are among those who feel overly "Googled" you might like to give these guys a shot. It’s a little too soon to say more, but the early signs are very encouraging.

After signup, you will be taken straight to your account and provided with the javascript code you will need to start tracking your pages. (The confirmation email took a while to arrive, but you don’t need it to get started in any case). I inserted it in the footer of my blogs and within a couple of hours you will start to see reporting. It’s all very painless and simple to set up. The data provided includes things such as entry and exit pages, time on site, geographical data including maps, hot spot tracking, click throughs, traffic sources, keywords and keyphrases. It’s all presented with pretty graphs and pie charts allowing you to see exactly what’s going on on your websites and blogs.

I’ve added a few screenshots below for a bit more detail on how the service looks once you’re inside your control panel

This is one of the drop down navigation and reporting menus in the left sidebar

Here you can see the pie chart display option of stats

and if you prefer alternative displays, just click on the icons at top left to switch to another option

Yep I'm feeling over googled. But does it have bounce rates, loyalty, and those kinds of stats? They are excellent.

@OsONY

Yes it provides details on bounces and loyalty. The site gives a broad overview of the stats it will provide and as I say, I only installed it yesterday so I'm still finding my way around.

It's pretty, but the presentation is different to Google's although it's pretty easy to interpret. Just a case of getting used to the changes :-)

If you're happy with Google Analytics I'm not suggesting this is better, just a good alternative for anyone seeking it.
31/10 16:47:28
I'll try to put up a few more screenshots shortly, to give a better idea of what you'll see in the stats areas.
31/10 16:51:27
Maurice, Interesting. I wouldn't mind checking out the alternatives, although it's unlikely I'll change in the short term.

But what I'm really thinking, is that it would surely be better to run stats software on your own server. It must be faster than using a third party solution right? I guess the problem is find a free or cheap stats program with the functionality to match Analytics.

Hi Stephen

I'm not savvy enough to know if running stats on my own server would be better or not ;-)

TDavid said on a previous post the GA does not appreciably slow down page loads and he has done some extensive testing I believe.

I just felt that posting and promoting alternative services (there's nothing in it for me I hasten to add) is to make folks aware that there are alternative choices out there. This is a very good one for a free option and seems better than most. I'm not exhibiting paranoia about Google knowing too much about me or my sites either, I'm sure they couldn't care less, but the little guys who challenge the big will often find support from me because I believe they deserve a fair crack at the market.

Hi Maurice,

Yes I use GA and it doesn't slow my pages appreciably. I like what you're doing with finding alternative services, keep it up! I'm just thinking out load that it would be better not to rely on third parties at all, if we don't have to. But I don't know of any viable self hosted alternatives at this stage.
01/11 19:54:29
I've never been a huge stat guy, although I know I should be, and everything you mentioned is pretty much all I check frequently. About once a month I'll dig in and take a look at everything I can, but I'm with you on getting away from Google's near monopoly.

As I stated in my recent blog post, I'm not trying to get away from their traffic :) but I would prefer to keep all the data from my end out of their hands where possible.

Thanks for the recommendation Maurice. I'll definitely keep it in mind and possibly make the switch sometime in the future.

Thanks guys for the feedback - I appreciate what you're saying Stephen, but, I'm not aware of anything like that being available either. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist of course. Anyone out there know of such a thing?

There are plenty of paid analytics services, although how much longer they will be around in the face of Google's onslaught is debatable. Most free services don't come close to Google in terms of features and information. Google are just using tried and tested business practices to kill the competition. No foul there - good business sense, but it aims to eliminate consumer choice.

Josh, I hear what you're saying and I think we are thinking along the same lines. Thanks for Stumbling this one too.

thx for the heads up...yes I have been feeling overly "Googled" like you stated. Pretty ignorant that they own the internet...at least from an SEO standpoint. I'm going to check this tool out and hope I have good results, thx
02/11 14:29:47
Hi Matthew,

Thanks for dropping by and I hope you will find the service to your liking. It's free, so even if you don't get along with it you've not really lost anything but a little time :-)

Looks like you have a good gaming site there even though it's all a bit beyond an old soul like me!

@Stephen
Hosting the software on your server is better for a low to medium traffic site. But for a high traffic site, it will lead to heavy load on the server as the data is to be processed and stored in the database. Most of the traffic analysis service providers have several dedicated servers running with load balancing facility. For example StatCounter.com has 30 dedicated servers for processing your stats.

When you use GA and download urchin.js file from Googles server, your browser will have to open a second conenction to the external server. This will create an unnecessary delay, though it is small.

But sometimes, though very rarely, Google's servers also become overloaded. At such times, the file takes a long time to load. If you place the code in your page's head section then the page won't load at all. When Urchin was offered free to users by Google as Google Analytics, a large number of users started using GA and the load became too heavy for their servers. And for the users, most of the pages started getting timed out. And it was after that, Google started recommending GA users to put the javascript code just before the closing </body> tag, so that atleast the page content loads. Till then they recommended putting the code in the head section of the page.

This can be overcome by downloading urchin.js to your server and loading it from there. You can also use my Local Analytics plugin for this purpose, and it will autmatically update your hosted copy of urchin.js at predefined intervals.

If you are looking for a hosted solution, then Mint (http://www.haveamint.com/) is the best. But it is not free and costs you $30 per site. I have been using Firestats(http://firestats.cc) for the last few months and it is the best free program I have seen, especially for wordpress blogs.
04/11 11:59:42
@Joyce

Thanks for your very helpful comments in relation to GA and for the suggested alternatives. I didn't know about Firestats, so I shall certainly have a looksee and the link is appreciated for readers here.

I think a lot of people are under the impression that there are no free options that really compare to Google, only paid services such as Clicky, and it's great to see recommendations from other bloggers and users. Thanks for sharing yours.
04/11 15:56:56
In my opinion hosted solutions are more accurate compared to remote services. Because most of the remote services uses either javascript or an image file for tracking visitors, which can be blocked by many adblockers.
But hosted code tracks each visits for sure.

Hi all,

I'm the Marketing Director for AuriQ Systems, which developed myRT (http://myrt.auriq.com). Thanks for the great post and helpful comments. We are in the middle of a major upgrade to the service that will make our current service even better - and it will still be free and real time. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here or visit our blog at http://myrt.auriq.com/blog and post a comment there. We also have a line of analytics widgets called Visit Widgets (http://www.visitwidget.com) that are free and do a lot of what myRT does, but in a way that you can share your visitor data with your visitors - something no other analytics service does. Again, great post and we'll take the feedback here very seriously.

Best Regards,
Chad Catacchio

Hi Chad,

Great, thanks for stopping by and adding to the conversation - it's cool that program owners monitor blogs for feedback and take the time to respond.

I'm finding the service excellent so far, no complaints whatsoever and it's easier to get to grips with than Google's service. Nice presentation and all the information I want/need from an analytics program. Thanks too for the additional links, I'll be sure to have a look at the widgets - I did have Feedjit running here for a while and I think some readers are curious about visitors so again, thanks for sharing the link.

I look forward to using your excellent free services for a long time, and thanks again for your input here at TCH. I hope I can bring you some more loyal users over time :-)

Great, thanks! Just the thing I was looking for. Using any Google service has become absolutely taboo for me.

I can add two similar, free and quite versatile statistics services:

http://www.histats.com

Maintained by an Italian guy. Several language versions, a lot of flash on the site. Many features, can also count downloads and supports invisible counters. It's the statistics service I'm using right now on my two little sites. Am not savvy enough to judge how reliably it counts. Recently I had some doubts about its reliability, but I might be wrong. So, I might try out myrt.auriq soon, or this one:

http://www.4stats.de

Free German service (no English language section, sorry, maybe it can be used even without a knowledge of German). Seems to do everything a sophisticated statistics service should do. Can use invisible mode, but does not seem to be able to count downloads, from what I've seen. Wrote them an email about this today.

Hi Wickthing,

Thanks for dropping by and for your contribution.

I'm sure you will like the MyRT program, it's been very reliable for me to date. Thanks for providing another couple of alternatives for my visitors - the more you look the more you find!

My German is very poor so not sure a non-English service would help me personally, but I'm sure any visitors from German speaking countries will appreciate the link.

Thanks again, and happy new year to you!
31/12 13:57:42
Thanks! Likewise, caymanhost! Found your site the other day when I yahooed for Google analytics + alternatives. ;-)

Maybe some courageous guy can try the German site. After all, it's mainly about numbers and they are using Arabic numerals there. :o) The link on the left of their start page named "Demo Statistik" shows (with graphs and tables) what their service can do. Almost all the links then on the left demonstrate the various statistics features. Quite impressive and very detailed. Personally, too much info for me. I just want to see whether I get any hits at all. Yeah, I saw your hit on the Histats counter I'm using right now! Thank you so much for it! LOL! Happy new year, though 6 hours later for you!

Has anyone out there heard about WideCircles.com. It seems like a way better service then wasting money on PPC. Apparently they are using refering websites ( forums, blogs, wiki, etc. ) and have a viral word of mouth distributed approach to it. My friend told me he got around 100 visits from single post which cost him $0.40c. I am going to give them a try today . In case you are intrested here it is. http://widecircles.com

For non commercial Websites etracker.de is a great alternative
23/11 15:03:05
Hi Mark,

Thanks for the link, it does indeed look like another nice alternative from the quick browse I had around the homepage. (If you visit remember to select the language from the drop down box unless you speak German)
