Google as a whole is not good for small business any longer. It's a black box designed to extract as much money as possible from small business while giving back as little value as possible. This piece explains why Adwords is something to be skeptical about: "Why Google Adwords is Not Helpful to Small Business" http://smartstartup.typepad...

12/07: Google Adsense Stories
A short while ago on this blog I made mention of some of the advertising alternatives available to publishers. The thrust of that post was that whilst Google Adsense is a leading light for publishers, you should never put all your eggs in one basket.
The wisdom of this has been harshly illustrated by a story from a publisher who has recently fallen foul of Google's rules at a cost to the publisher of around $200,000. It is staggering to realize that there are indeed websites out there generating six figure monthly Adsense revenues - sure you hear a lot of claims but to see a publisher of such magnitude publicly publish their Google banning is unusual to say the least. Tales from people who have been kicked out of Adsense are commonplace, but rarely will you see one of this nature.
You can read the story on this page Banned from Google Adsense - Lost $200,000
For many of us, the thought of earning such amounts on a monthly basis, purely from PPC advertising are no more than a distant dream, indeed, if I cover the costs of hosting for a month I'm quite pleased!! As to whether the ban was justified, there are no real details, but you have to assume that for a publisher generating such substantial revenue, Google are pretty sure of their position - after all, they retain 20% of Adwords revenue and such a high profile Adsense ban proves that they are indeed very serious about anyone who tries to game the system. ForAdwords advertisers this is great news, for publishers it's another stern warning from Google - if you mess with Adsense rules, you will lose your account and any revenue you have earned that is unpaid prior to the ban.
