04/11: Internet Explorer Nag Installed

After fighting every few weeks with Microsoft’s sucky browser, I’ve decided to implement a nag on this domain for any visitors still using it.

I am not a coder, just a blogger and I have been constantly frustrated by errors when viewing this blog in various releases of IE. Every time I make even a minor change, it seems I have to ensure that the site will still render properly in IE 6 or IE 7. Other browsers interpret my admittedly amateur efforts without difficulty 99% of the time, so why can’t Microsoft produce a decent browser capable of doing the same?

Fortunately a large percentage of my visitors are Firefox users but in second place comes Internet Explorer. If you visit this blog or the main TCH site using IE, you will now be presented with a discreet but prominent "nag" to upgrade to a proper browser. Anyone else will notice no changes, so if you want to see it in action you’ll need to visit with IE.

Why not tell your visitors to dump IE in favor of something less buggy, more tweakable and hopefully more secure?

IE sucks shite, but what I have learned is that it should be the first and last you test with because the majority of blog readers use it!

Hi Damien,

Come on, tell us what you really think :-)

I do have a larger FF readership base than IE, but what you say still holds true, particularly for more mainstream internet users. However, this is my attempt at continuing education ;-) Perhaps it will persuade a few more visitors to drop that buggy piece of Microsh***e rubbish.

How I agree with you! I am very, very tired of having a web design perfect in FF, Opera, Safari, Konqueror etc etc and all messed up in IE! Why should I have to spend 80% of my time adjusting the design for just 1 browser?

Looking at my visitor logs 86% are using FF and only 11% IE so perhaps people are at last seeing the light.

Hi Janet

How nice to see my Caribbean neighbor - thanks for stopping by.

I can imagine it being even more frustrating for a professional web designer. At least when my blogs screw up courtesy of IE, I at least have the fallback defence that I'm just a hopeless amateur and can make excuses ;-).

Not so funny when it's your work on the line and customers expect their site to look lovely to everyone. It really is poor that MS can't fix all the bugs - surely their browser has been around long enough!!

By way of an update, the nag was removed a long time ago as feedback from many people suggested it was not very professional :-) One of those experiments that didn't go very far in the end.

Hopefully it did raise awareness of alternative browsers though. The site where I originally found the nag code has long since departed the web I'm afraid so even if you wanted to try this for yourself I could no longer tell you how.
