18/10: Kontera and Post2Blog Updates

The past couple of days have seen a slight reduction in productivity due to 1) My ISP having a long outage yesterday and 2) because I have been working alongside my wife at The Morgan Gallery which we have been babysitting whilst the owners are away. This doesn’t normally affect me because I can blog from here too, but there has been much to do in recent days as the date of her newest solo show fast approaches. Today has spent rearranging the gallery somewhat for the visiting TV crew and then putting everything back as it should be. Tomorrow I will be minding the store alone.

A few little changes have now been implemented here - I hope that you will have noticed the absence of Kontera. After reading some of the comments I decided to take it down, at least for an experimental period. The Amazon contextual links are still appearing but hopefully these don’t irritate people too much. You might also have noticed the implementation of a handy "tag cloud" in my sidebar, which I’ll talk about at a later date.

I’ve been writing for other people over the past two days as well and this has affected my output on the blog too. How some people manage to stay on top of multiple blogs I’ve no idea! I’m also encountering a few problems with my rather ancient laptop and it’s making typing a little laborious. I should really get around to buying a new one, but I love my current machine and it has served me really well.

One small triumph is the success in finally getting Post2Blog- a desktop blogging client for Windows - to work with my Nucleus platform so this post is being made using the software. If you don’t already use a third party blogging client, they come highly recommended and I have mentioned several available blog posting software choices in the past and there are several free options listed here.

I use Kontera, but I make the ads only show after a few days. I know you don't use wordpress, but you could try adding the logic to supress the Kontera for a few days by adding the appropriate span tags. That way, if you get search traffic on older articles, those people may click.

I think it's worth it if you write "pillar" articles that eventually do get traffic.

@Lucia

That's a good idea Lucia, although I'm not sure my abilities are up to the task ;-)

I did try Kontera Control on my WP blog but it didn't like it for some reason - can't remember exactly what errors I was getting . I may try again and implement Kontera on older posts there. If I can figure out a way of using such a delay here I might be prepared to try it, thanks for the suggestion.

lucia, can you share a link to delay Kontera on Wordpress. I would like to see how that works.

Maurice, what did you not like about Kontera? I know they do not make it easy to limit the number of links per page / per paragraph. You might try Vibrant Media just for that reason? Just a thought.

@Ian

You can find Lucia's Kontera Control plugin for Wordpress at her blog. She's just updated it I believe.

I didn't dislike Kontera myself, but it's not popular with a lot of readers and so I decided to pull it on the basis that their views are more important than my own and the votes against outweighed the votes in favor.

I'm not familiar with Vibrant Media, but if you have a link I'd be interested in taking a look, thanks.

Vibrant Media is very similar to Kontera except it's pay per impressions (when someone scrolls over the text link). There is still a popup so if you are annoyed by that, VM is not for you :)

As for a link of what it looks like, here is the only post (from my blog) that I can find that has a link. See the words "Las Vegas" in the 2nd paragraph.

Hope that helps.

On a side note, I noticed you re-published one of Josh Spaulding's articles. I was wondering why that name looked familiar. Josh left me a comment on one of my blog posts. Small world! :)

Thanks for that information Ian, I'll be sure to check it out.

Josh is quite a prolific contributor and good guy (don't worry Josh I'm not stalking y'all LOL) and as you say, small world indeed :-) I like to plug those who have useful things to say and take the time to participate on my humble blog :-)
