24/05: Marketing And Twitter Revisited

Twitter marketing, it's all the rage and since my last post on Tooting Your Twitter Horn I've come up with a bit more to add to my previous thoughts. Some of this has come from experience and some of it from the thoughts and observations of others.

No, I'm not going to retract what I have said previously, I still believe Twitter is a kind of love/hate thing for me, but I have learned a lot more since last writing and much of it is worth sharing. This is not a "do it my way" "do it this or that way" type of offering, just a few more things to share and disseminate to those struggling to find their Twitter comfort zone.

So many people are talking about Twitter that it is fairly easy to find answers to most of the questions you may have, and it seems there is always something new to learn.

My use of Twitter on a daily basis has seen my network grow steadily and there have been no real secrets to this happening. If you participate and seeek out like minded people it is almost inevitable. Yes, there are ways to accelerate the size of your network and I've tried a few of them. Like most new users my choices were not always wise when I first started out, but I have since discovered some very useful and powerful tools.

Hint, many of the scripts that require you to Tweet a message advertising the service are not well received by many but it's up to you regarding the use of individual programs.

However' learning as you go has always been my preferred method online and it will be the same for most new Tweeters. So, let's get onto a few gripes first...mostly everyday things on Twitter.

(These things irritate a lot of people but if you think they are things that will work for you I'm not going to stop you - the Twitterverse is a land of free speech to my mind).

I have come to agree with the overriding philosophy that Twitter is first and foremost about getting involved and interracting with your network. I have struck up some really cool conversations and met a lot of people by participating actively so as far as I'm concerned it was time well spent. By the same token, the mistakes that so many make, seem so blatant and obvious (and we're talking strictly marketing here).

An experienced eye can soon tell the people using services like TweetLater that queue messages and post them on a schedule set by the user who will doubtless be off doing other things with no intention of ever spending time on "social" Tweeting. For them it's just an advertising medium. The fact that their Tweets are monotonously uniformly spaced and are always the same sales messages every day is, I would suggest, guaranteed to turn people off. It's the good old scattergun approach, probably delivering the same old carnage in terms of results.

It's a sloppy tactic and it's probably doomed to failure.

Then we have the "liars". Yes there are lots of them, so let's be frank shall we? There are many examples of this type flowing through the stream of Twitter.

Affiliate links blatantly posted with accompanying false claims "I'm making XYZ a week with this crap and you can too...."usually followed by a hoplink. Alternatively, "I've suffered from XYZ infirmity for years but this cured me....(another hoplink).

Now, if you want people to trust you and buy something on your recommendation, lying is not a good start. Speaking in the first person when it is obvious you have never done anything more than troll your way through the Clickbank marketplace and grab a hoplink is marketing ineptitude at full throttle. And let's face it people, who believes someone who has made a fortune last month, reversed his balding, lost 500 pounds, given up smoking and perfected his golf swing all at once? That's some dude.

Then we have those promoting Twitter tools to explode your following. If you have only a small following yourself how do you think this looks? Be very careful with your reputation, because online, it's often all you have.  I know people are looking for simpler ways to build their accounts, but if you behave naturally and talk to others, your following will grow "organically". Be patient or spend lots of money on a pro tool like Hummingbird (see resources below).

Along the same lines are those who brag about success but forget that it is easy for someone to do five minutes of research and blow them out of the water. Prime example was a young lad (if his avatar is to be believed) pushing several sites promising marketing riches and the like. On inspection, each site was an early 90's cookie cutter template with a few PPC ads slapped on and content written by someone probably more accustomed to eating Farley's Rusks and peeing in their Huggies. What's more, the sites were receiving zero traffic, or as close to zero as you can get.

More disturbing however was the individual's fawning and retweeting of a so called "guru" by whom he has obviously been conned into parting with money probably better spent on a college fund, for information worth absolutely nothing. Said guru/marketer was also busy making claims for another of his devotees sites regarding levels of success, totally debunked by looking at the site's statistics.

Now, as I've said before, far be it from anyone to tell anyone that there is a correct way to behave on Twitter, that annoys me just as much, but there are right and wrong ways to behave in life and those should really carry through to what you do on the internet. Yeah, some hope I know but it's worth saying.

On the upside, I have also met some cool people on Twitter and have found some great uses for it. It can be fun, if time consuming, and from a marketing perspective it is certainly worth incorporating into your efforts.

Yesterday I posted a tweet that was picked up by SEO master AndyBeard and the resulting response by way of sales was quite remarkable. Not many high profile users will give you the time of day like Andy, but, if someone with a large and relevant following knows you and decides to press the right buttons, the benefits can be delivered very quickly on Twitter.

I've posted some interesting but by no means extensive, resource links below for further reading. Ultimately Twitter is rising in my list of priorities and I'm now suggesting that maybe it should in yours too.

Oh man, I really dislike auto-tweeters. It defeats the entire purpose of twitter and social media. I also really dislike people that have their twitter set up to their blog so every time the make a new post u get "new blog post:....". Write something original that will get peoples attention.

@CG

I agree but at the end of the day they will eventually come to realize that it is a self defeating tactic.

If they are marketing something they will probably see little or no result and probably a lot of unfollows/blocks as time goes on.

People who never Tweet anything but self promotion and affiliate links soon get noticed by others.

As for me I usually keep following them unless they really bleat excessively because they are just the sort of people who probably want to learn but don't know what they are doing. I guess you can't blame them for trying, and maybe those more experienced can offer guidance.

Great tips on Twitter. I am new to Twitter and this provided a new tool to use in my internet marketing efforts.

I bookmarked this post. I'm still in progress of developing my English language blog along with the Twitter account. I'm reading all Tweeter tips to start well and be more popular than Oprah :)

Enjoyed your article on twitter. My question is how do you put time aside to work on twitter. It's takes up so much time?
29/05 07:49:43
@Louis,

That's actually a very good question. As you probably know there are plenty of services that allow you to schedule tweets but as you should also be aware these are not popular in the Twitter community. As one commentator has already said, twitter bots and people who use them to constantly send ads to their followers soon see a high proportion of unfollows.

To try and make Twitter time productive you will benefit greatly from installing something like Seesmic Desktop. This gives you a lot of control over your Twitter stream.

I tend to have it running while I'm online and that way I can pick up on any Tweets involving me or certain other users who I follow. I'll also scroll through my timeline periodically to see what I've missed or what others are talking about.

If you are going to use Twitter as one of your marketing tools however, there is no getting away from the fact that you do need to allocate some time to make connections with other people. The practice of sending out nothing but ads and self promotion won't be effective.

Once you start following a few people and others start to follow you, you will soon get the hang of checking in on Twitter every now and then during the course of your working day. There is no need to be glued to it all day every day.

I really do think that instead of spending time on searching to find answers for your queries it's much better to have discussions online , read related blogs and things like that, I'm not saying that searching is not useful, of course it is but for certain queries discussions are always better. As you said its time well spent.

If you wanna get into twitter marketing you need to do it now. I think that the twitter is going to die in the next 5-6 months so now's the last moment to get in on that.

@Diety

Interesting theory and I guess time will tell whether Twitter will fizzle and die or how it will hold up against Google's new service due in around June.

@Certifications

Real Time search is becoming more and more popular.

I use Power Twitter a Firefox add on which will show search results from Twitter at the top of my Google search results. Invariably I will visit some of those results.

This emphasizes the important part Twitter can play in driving traffic to your sites, and the fact that posting on Twitter using relevant keywords is also a good idea if you are looking to target certain audiences.

You can get Power Twitter for Firefox here

Wow I had no idea there were so many cool applications for twitter, thanks for showing me the light!
06/06 21:41:40
@Charity,

This list barely scratches the surface to be honest but I hope you found some that you can use.
06/06 23:28:25
One of the biggest usage of twitter is a replacement of RSS. I 'tweet' about new post on my blog and I can immediately see people clicking on the link. These are people who would have come to the blog anyway, but now it's being shared by more people. RSS didn't allow sharing all that well, unless people are using google reader.
10/06 12:37:04
Incredible, who'd have thought twitter has so many apps available for it. I'm as surprised as Charity is :)

As a marketing consultant I get a lot of questions about twitter. I understand how it makes sense for businesses that with a target demographic that uses social media. I honestly don't get how it can be beneficial for an engineer or a funeral home. People are still asking for it in all industries. I'm I right in thinking that it's only good for certain businesses.
13/06 22:58:07
@UDH

That's a good question and I don't really have a solid answer. As with all social media, the key to success with marketing on Twitter has to be a large targeted follower base.

I'm sure it works better for some "niches" than others but bearing in mind the size of its user base I would think that there probably is an audience out there for almost everything. How large an audience is of course another question entirely.

Twitter's biggest drawback is that it can be a time hog and you really need to discipline yourself to limit your Twitter time to a reasonable level unless you have an employee or employees tasked specifically with using it as a promotional vehicle or customer service type tool as I know some companies are doing.

For small business it can be beneficial simply because at present Google indexes Tweets pretty quickly and with more people using real time search a well thought out Tweet can send targeted traffic to a website or blog quite effectively.

Very informative... Enjoyed your article on twitter.
06/07 03:33:57
The way I see it, Twitter became just another tool to keep us mushroomed - kept in darkness and fed with shit ;)
With the amount of ads placed everywhere they can be placed, aggressive seo and sem people shaping the net ... I think the only way to survive this with your sanity intact is to stop using mainstream Internet media. This way you still might be thinking for yourself in a few years, not thinking what others have twitted, or whatever.
I'd love to see the evidence that would contradict this statement, I really would.
08/07 04:38:43
@Wyjazdy

I think that you are right in part, although the ability to think for oneself is not inherent in a large number of people judging by what you see not only on the internet but in all mainstream media.

The evidence for this is everywhere, the culture of celebrity, the brainless desire of many for "fame", the lack of education, manners, respect for others, the loss of family values etc. Throw in the desire to apportion blame to anyone and everyone but yourself, the ridiculous political correctness that permeates everything people do and "nanny states" that so many seem to accept without question. The list goes on and on but I'll try not to here.
08/07 13:09:59
wow, what a great app base. Wish facebook had all these apps :|
24/07 02:47:09
thanks for the good tip. Much better than what I paid $500 for last time. However, I do find Twittering takes up so much time and effort
29/11 06:35:43
I agree with you, I also receive a lot of promotional messages on twitter and I did not bother reading some of those. Who in the earth would believe that they will earn hundreds of $$$by just following the link posted in their messages? If you want to market your products through twitter make your messages personal, build a trust and be honest.
