31/05: Sub Standard Web Hosting - The Consequences

Once again the consequences of cheap, poor quality hosting, are felt by both users and webmasters as a whole raft of traffic exchanges go offline and stay offline for two days and counting.

I feel for the owners of several exchanges who will be losing business and goodwill as each hour of downtime passes. The inconvenience suffered by users is also acute and many hits and hours of surfing will have gone to waste particularly for those not organized enough to have paused all the sites affected in the other exchanges, thus wasting thousands of displays with "unable to connect" messages.

I am not sure who hosts all of these sites, but if there is any justice they too will lose a lot of business over this extended outage. All webmasters appreciate that technical difficulties are unavoidable, but over 48 hours demonstrates a very poor response rate and limited technical know how on behalf of the hosting company.

Hosting is more than a fancy website and grand claims - when you choose a hosting company for your online business, if you don't want to suffer a similar fate, be sure to choose your hosting company wisely. Bargain basement often means that's where your business will be left when it comes to the crunch.
