Most web hosting companies will offer domain names as part of their service and if you are happy with the price you are being asked to pay for the domain name of your choice that’s all well and good, but customers should be aware that there can be considerable variations in the price of a domain name, depending on who you buy it through. As with all things, shop around - if you have chosen a web hosting package but are not happy about the charge for the domain or domains you want to register, nothing prevents you from buying them elsewhere.

There are those that believe you should always keep your domain registrations separate from your hosting provider and in some cases, people have experienced problems after trying to move hosting companies and keep the domain they registered through them. If you’re at all unsure, ask the hosting company upfront exactly where you will stand with the domain if you buy/register through them. It probably won’t be a problem, but it can be. It’s best to have their position, in writing, which may well save you some hassle at a later stage should you need or want to change hosts.

A dotcom address will tend to be more costly as it is still the most widely recognized standard, but there are often good deals to be had on more modern variations such as dottv, dotbiz, dotws etc. If you prefer a country specific domain (.ca .co.uk .ky for example, these are widely available too) Think about what your website’s objectives are and if you are targeting an international audience it might not be wise to go for a geographical domain.
