Free Hosting From Populora.com

I received an email the other day regarding a newly launched site going by the name of Populora.com.

Populora is a free service that requires no registration and allows you to upload web pages to the web through an online interface. You can upload a single page of HTML or a zip file containing your website (10mb max file size).

The service is ad supported, meaning that third party advertisements will be tagged onto your page(s). Providing you are not using it as a commercial venture this is probably not a concern for you, although you obviously have no control over the appearance or content of such ads.

When you upload a file, the page title you use will become the URL. For example www.populora.com/yourpage title.

The really puzzling thing is that should somebody else choose the same title, your page will be replaced by theirs if you have not updated your page for more than 24 hours. The website also states that once you have uploaded a page, anyone can edit or update it! Aside from a Wiki, I don’t honestly see why anyone would want such a feature and it seems to be a rather major stumbling block, even for those just wanting to host a simple non commercial page or two.

I haven’t tried the service out myself but it seems to me that the shortcomings outlined above will make it somewhat of a non-starter for many people. After all, leaving your work open to editing by any Tom Dick or Harry who comes along and takes a notion seems rather reckless. Once someone makes a change to your work, you can do nothing about it for at least 24 hours either.

Once you have submitted a page it has to be manually approved before going live which they say takes up to a few hours. You can update your page(s) once in any 24 hour period.

The site itself is a very simple to use interface, but I have to say that there are plenty of other more fully featured free hosting options out there, and even some who do not put their ads on your pages. If simplicity is a major consideration, then you might want to take a look at Populora but in all honesty its applications are very limiting.
