Tag clouds have often been pushed as being a vital part of SEO, particularly in the blogging world. In the following video Matt Cutts from Google dispels some of the myths and answers some of the more common questions about tag clouds.
Personally I’ve never been a fan of them, and I don’t think I’ve ever clicked on a link in one on any site and have always judged their usefulness based on my own behavior. Anyway, love them or hate them, here is the lowdown from Google on just how useful or harmful they might be – the general gist would seem to be, as with so many things, everything in moderation

I AGREE. It’s a worthless waste of time. I’ve seen nor heard any huge benefit coming from such a task. Next.

I also gotta agree that they’re a waste of time and certainly of very little benefit to the user. Categories are far more familiar for folks or even simple search works wonders if the user is looking for something specific.

That was very informative about tag clouds, I was taught to use them, but I will definitely rethink how much I use them after this video.

I used to love to surf sites through the tag cloud, but I guess too many people took your advice. I hardly see them anymore. Coincidentally, I hardly see pagers or parachute pants anymore…

That’s right. I could hardly see tag clouds in blogs site I visit. But personally, I have not implemented that on my own site. Haven\’t seen any great deal of a benefit from it.
