Free Hosting With MySQL PHP Cpanel and Fantastico

Written by caymanhost on November 26, 2008 – 12:12 am

I posted a while back about this free hosting service and have been promoting it around the web albeit on a fairly casual basis. Looking at my statistics it struck me that despite a good number of signups for the service, there was a terrible attrition rate when it came to drop outs.

Before reading any further, we suggest you click below:

(Please see our IMPORTANT update here for explanations as to why you should be extremely careful with this website. Our recommendation is to avoid at all costs. Serious allegations appearing on the web which should not be ignored).

WARNING – DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE – google THEIR NAME + “SCAM” DO NOT GIVE YOUR INFORMATION ON ANY SITE THAT HAS NO PRIVACY POLICY OR TO ANY SITE THAT MAY COMPROMISE YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS. AFFILIATES – YOU WILL NOT BE PAID FOR SIGNUPS. PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

As an affiliate marketer I’m always intrigued to know why these things happen. In this instance I had not used the service myself and just promoted it because I figured there are probably hundreds of thousands of people out there who would like some free web hosting with no ads and with all of the features of a paid service, or at least a good number of them. When the company notified me that they were including Fantastico in the free package I thought it would do even better.

Although I didn’t focus a huge amount of promotional effort the signups did start to flow in so I was initially very pleased, but when more than half of the people I had referred simply let their accounts become inactive I gave the matter some more thought. I had recently written a post over at my internet marketing blog about promoting free products and services and why it was not always a sure thing, so my natural curiosity got the better of me and I decided to sign up for the free hosting service myself, as an experiment.

I didn’t want to buy a domain – I wanted to experience a totally no cost solution as I imagine most people attracted to the service would want too, and, judging by my affiliate stats, that is indeed the case.

I wondered if people were dropping out because the service didn’t do what it claimed, or because it was basically useless. So how did I get on?

Well, signup was very quick and painless and once inside I did a quick exploration to see how things stacked up against my own hosting provider. They did of course fall way short of what I get from my host, but to be fair, this was all free and I have to say I was quite impressed by what was on offer.

Here are a couple of shots of the cpanel interface (click on them to enlarge)

freehost thumb2 Free Hosting With MySQL PHP Cpanel and Fantastico

freehost2 thumb2 Free Hosting With MySQL PHP Cpanel and Fantastico

Anyone familiar with cpanel will be know this kind of view, and will see that it is a pretty standard hosting control panel with all the features you would expect. Knowing it is from a free provider however, might surprise many people.

So, having had an initial nose around I logged into Fantastico to see what scripts were on offer. I wanted to set up a Wordpress blog for performance testing purposes and was pleased to see that the blogging software was all present and correct (albeit a very slightly outdated version). Happy with that, I can also confirm that the company includes Joomla, drupal, PHPBB, Coppermine, Simple Machines (forum), PHP Website and B2Evolution (blogging) software. OK. it’s not a huge list as you would expect to see from a paid host nowadays, but it’s free, remember.

The web stats on offer is a bit lame but with all the free analytics software around nowadays, who really needs it? All I would say is that to get server stats you would need to install a visitor counter on your pages and I can’t be bothered with that!

For the techies here are a quick few facts. The server runs PHP 5.2, and MySQL 5.0.51-community on Apache version 2.2.10 (Unix). You will get 5 MySQL databases and a claimed 100GB of bandwidth every month and 1500 Mb of disk space. It’s too early for me to talk about downtime and hardware issues but there were some complaints in the members forum area – no great surprise there, you will find the moaners at any hosting company, even the free ones :-) (Update – it would seem that complaints are very often justified and not tolerated by 000Webhost.com who will happily delete your account if they take exception to anything you might say – literally)

Getting back to my experiment, I installed Wordpress using Fantastico and all went without a hitch. I hunted down a free template to suit my needs, grabbed all the plugins (a lot) that I wanted and started work on the blog. I have to say that there were very few hitches or issues encountered with the hosting. I used a good number of plugins and none of them failed due to server issues. I did have a couple of problems but these were code related as opposed to being caused by server settings. All in all the installation and set up of a totally new Wordpress blog went very well. I had to change a few CHMOD settings here and there to enable me to edit theme files but the FTP interface in cpanel was cool and easy to use and for everything else I used FireFTP anyway.

After setting up my site there was some brief downtime due to the fact that your account needs to go through an approval process to weed out the abusers who always come along to free sites unfortunately. It’s good to know that the company weeds out the bad apples as you don’t want to be associated with a sub domain that earns itself a reputation for spamming or other illegal or dubious activity. The site was not down for very long at all in any case.

The only issues I’ve noticed are occasional MySQL quirks and sometimes when posting to the blog an error screen. This is odd because on checking the Wordpress control panel the post has been put into the unpublished drafts. Those glitches aside, so far so good.

My questions remained unanswered though. Why did so many new users of the service drop out without ever using it? As far as I can tell it’s a bargain at the price. Why use Wordpress.com when you can host your own blog and have complete control over content with a free host like this? If you are looking for free hosting, I’d seriously consider giving these guys a go, particularly if you are just setting up a non business related site. For serious business users I wouldn’t ever recommend free hosting, but who knows, maybe one of these days there will be a service good enough even for business users. This free hosting has already moved the goalposts in the traditional “free” web hosting marketplace.

Since writing this piece our experience with this company went rapidly downhill and we would not recommend them at all. Get a free web hosting account with cpanel PHP MySQL & Fantastico at your own risk. 000Webhost are not to be trusted with your data.

Footnote: The blog created in this experiment was once found at http://caymanislands.net76.net but since the company’s abrupt deletion of my files and account it has gone the way of all living things.

Site5 Hosting Customer Review

Written by caymanhost on October 5, 2007 – 9:01 pm

Review by Ricky Lim

I have been hosting some of my websites with Site5 for about a year now. I also have other websites hosted in other web hosting companies. Here is my review for Site5 based on my own personal experience with them

Why I chose Site5

I got to know about Site5 through the webhostingtalk forums. At that time, I was searching for a reliable and reputable cheap web hosting company for a couple of my new websites. I’d heard a lot of good reviews about Site5 and decided to try them out. Since they have a 60 day money back refund, I figured if I did not like it, I would ask for my money back. Anyway, I was basically testing their web hosting on my new websites so I was not terribly worried.

Site5 Hosting Plan

Site5 only offer two types of hosting plan : shared and reseller, so I took the superhosting extreme package. Basically here are the brief web hosting package details (see footnote for latest):

Diskspace : 8GB
Bandwidth : 500GB
Multisite Accounts : 5
Unlimited : domain pointers, ftp, mysql

It also comes with fantastico and cpanel. All this for about $109 annually which is pretty cheap. (see footnote) Please note this hosting plan is no longer available and is replaced with multisite dynamite plan. It is basically the same as my previous plan except for more diskspace and bandwidth. As I’m writing this, they have a promotion where you can get this hosting plan for 2 years at only $149 which I consider to be a good deal.

Unique Features of Site5 hosting

One feature I like about Site5 hosting is the multisite accounts. It is basically a full featured control panel for each domain. Unlike other shared web hosting companies which uses domain pointers, a multisite accounts exists on its own with its own subdomains, domain pointer, ftp, mysql etc. This help me to organize my websites better especially if you have a lot of domains. You can set the diskspace and bandwidth from the main pool of your web hosting account.

The other feature is the flashback which allows you to undo any changes you make to your website. It is a life saver especially when a website breaks down and you do not know the cause.

Things that can be improved

Though I like
target="_blank" >Site5 and would recommend it to friends, there are a few things that could make it better. One of them is the upgrade option. I recently upgraded my hosting plan to multisite dynamite and was told I had to shift to another server. The problem was I had to do the data transfer myself. With 3GB of data to transfer, not to mention the dozens of ftp, mysql and email accounts, it was a real hassle. Something I am sure their staff could have easily completed in a short time.

The other thing I didn’t like was I could not request for more IP addresses. If you know about SEO, then you know how having multiple IP addresses can be useful.

In all, I would still recommend Site5 due to its cheap web hosting plan, good support and high availability.

(Since the author wrote this review there have been some changes to the pricing and features of Site5 ’s hosting plans. Shared hosting is currently available for $5 per month for a two year contract. 12 month plan works out at $7 per month billed annually in advance. Monthly billing will cost $15 per month. Reseller accounts start at $20 per month billed annually in advance. Full details of all plans are available at the Site5 ’s Website).

Web Hosts Overselling

Written by caymanhost on July 22, 2007 – 6:53 pm

If you have been paying attention to the matter of web hosting in recent times you will probably have seen the term "overselling" and, depending on your experience you may either nod your head sagely or scratch it and wonder what it means. In order to clear matters up we have taken a look at the overselling trend and explain it here in simple terms. (Note: shared hosting means that your websites are stored on a server with a number of other customers sites and that all resources are shared by the customers on that server).

Web hosting companies usually promote their shared hosting services with "figures" and parameters of the hosting packages they are offering. Storage space on offer, monthly data transfer (bandwidth) limits etc. and although for most professionals this gives a fair indication of what kind of sites the service can support, the marketing philosophy is usually based on the belief that many people lack the knowledge to translate the meanings of the numbers and simply go for the biggest. In an attempt to outdo one another a lot of hosts have raised the numbers game to rather silly levels. On the face of it, some of these offerings just look too good to be true and in reality, they are. We have taken some hypothetical numbers for this exercise and you will often see far bigger numbers bandied about. Sometimes numbers are replaced by one word but we hope most people realize that hosting resources never can, and never will be, "unlimited".

Just by way of example, (and this is pretty arbitrary) let’s say that a company is offering 100GB of storage for $10 per month. If they are using entry level servers rather than high-end equipment which is far more expensive, their hard disk may perhaps be capable of storing around 400GB of data (based on current technology) and assuming that all that space was given over to storing customers content, they could host 20 accounts with 20GB of space, generating $200 monthly revenue. At that rate it would take over a year to even cover the cost of the server, and remember, our theoretical company is offering 100GB per user, not 20GB. Think about it – just four customers per server for $40 per month income would make the hosting company far more than a charity!

Realistically, few users can use more than 1-2 GB of space and most will probably need less than 100MB. If a customer did manage to gobble up 20GB of storage, hundreds of others will not, effectively subsidizing the few people who actually did manage to upload such huge amounts of content. (think about your own computer’s hard disk space and how much data it is capable of storing and what a tiny fraction of that would be used were you to make a backup of your site(s) – I think my last full backup was a shade over 20mb.

The offer from our fictitious company also includes 300GB of data transfer. So, let’s just say that most use around half that – 150GB – which means that around 200 sites could be served by a 100MBs line each one using the complete capacity of a half a megabit carrier – if the offer made was actually used by all customers, the hosting fees would not even cover the bandwidth costs! The truth is that almost none of the customers would need anywhere close to this amount of data transfer.

Basically, by overselling, the hosting companies are offering a service that they are pretty confident you won’t use; certainly one that they don’t want you to use and consequentially won’t ever allow you to use.

Let’s try and translate a few more numbers to give a very rough idea of your likely usage and visitor traffic. We’ll assume that you are going to use your 300GB bandwidth every month, 10GB every day, and we will assume that each visitor you receive results in a download of half a megabyte of data – that means that in the 15 hours a day of peak traffic times you would have 15,0000 visitors. This is a VERY rough example (the nature of internet traffic being what it is) but hopefully it illustrates just what a high traffic site you would be talking about, and how unlikely your business is ever going to need such resources. The point is, that no shared hosting account can handle a site of such magnitude so why do they offer these huge numbers as selling points? Is it deceptive or just good marketing?

If you are a potential customer, just remember that the offers will always be qualified by limitations set our elsewhere in the terms of service – not necessarily "small print" but something that so many people never read. The hypothetical situations outlined above will be prevented from ever becoming a reality by setting certain limits such as no two consecutive days in excess of x amount of bandwidth usage, no more than x hits per second to your site, database connection limits, database size limitations and individual file size limitations just to name a few.

Human nature being what it is, wanting something for nothing is something that marketers have long exploited and in such a hugely competitive industry, overselling was perhaps almost an inevitability, the snowball effect carrying many along with it.

In some ways, these overselling tactics by companies can be counter productive but when the competition steps up, market forces dictate the path for many. The forums are full of people bad mouthing hosts for shutting off their service ’without warning’ and often it is because of the perceived promises and lack of understanding of the real limits. Is it the fault of the host or the customer? It really takes two to tango as they say, but overselling to a market with limited knowledge of the product is a recipe for poor publicity and bad feeling when things come home to roost. Does this help either party? No, it doesn’t, but oversell is, at least for now, here to stay and although companies who oversell cannot simply be categorized as "bad hosts" it re-enforces the old caveat of "buyer beware".

Of course, there are still those that don’t oversell, or at least not to the ludicrous extent of others, and maybe you should seek out a shared hosting deal that costs a little more but backs up it’s service with a solid infrastructure of hardware, service and support. Balance your desire for "cheap" with an equally strong desire for "quality" and you’re on the right path to finding a host with whom you can be a happy and satisfied customer.

How To Choose Affordable Web Hosting

Written by caymanhost on June 18, 2007 – 7:48 pm

How to Choose Affordable web hosting by Mike Williams
It’s all about what you need; not what those web hosting companies want you to have. In order to find out what you need, a self-assessment needs to be made. Is it imperative that you have an email address with a domain name or will a generic one do? Do you need database support, filters for spam and other junk? What about tools to build your website? You’ve got to have a list of “must-haves” in order to make a wise decision for your next affordable web hosting option.

If you have no idea what you are doing with regard to web design, directing traffic to your website, or anything else that is technical, you will want a web host that has accessible tech support. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week is optimal as servers are known to go down at any time. For “full service” users, you can still expect affordable web hosting; however, it still may be a bit more than what an experienced web user pays with another company where only support via email or IM is available.

It’s all a matter of perspective. You get what you think you are paying for. Determine how much money you think you can spend for your website hosting. Extrapolate that out to determine if you are getting a good bargain or getting stiffed on the service. There are some plans that are as low as two dollars a month. While that is certainly an affordable web hosting price, what exactly are you getting for it? If you have to spend any excess time trying to get support, you are actually losing money. After all, your time is valuable too.

In addition, you have to be leery of those two dollar jobs. These prices are often an introductory rate to grab new customers because they are new. Who knows what will happen once you pay them? If you want to get warm, fuzzy feelings about your affordable web hosting company look them up on WHOIS and see how long they have been in business. Obviously, the longer the company has been providing affordable web hosting, the better.

If you are unsure about which affordable web hosting plan to choose from, try and visit some web master and web hosting forums. People love to talk about their experiences. Chances are that you just might find some informal information about that affordable web hosting company you are scoping out.

Of course, part of the whole affordable web hosting experience is choosing a company that is reliable and has a guarantee about uptime. What are not included in the reliability uptime factor are acts of God, hacker attacks and other circumstances out of their control. You can expect that mechanical failures, software issues and the like are covered as part of the plan. If a company touting affordable web hosting does not publish their uptime guarantee or does not want to impart that information, then they are not the right choice for you.

The bottom line is that you need to choose affordable web hosting that you feel comfortable dealing with. You do not want to hop from web host to web host, because not only do you lose time and money, but it can be a nuisance to transfer all your website files too.
