I've used Site5.com for about 2-3 years, and overall they're very good, although I will say that they've changed hands recently, and their customer service really isn't what it used to be. 1. Ease of use: 10/10. Fast, easy to signup, no hassle, getting started with any account is a breeze. 2. Price: They've recently added a deal that is around $5 a month, which is so cheap I'd almost find it scary. But this account has full benefits (own IP address, lots of MySQL databases, etc) 3. Service: Generally good, but it depends who you get. Their sales staff is better than their tech support, and sometimes you have to go up a tier or two to get someone good. One good point is that they have public forums, so often help can be found there from other members. 4. Reliability: Near-perfect. 5. Email: Usually this isn't a big issue because I use POP mail, but their webmail sucks (They offer Horde and Squirrel, I believe). I can barely stand using it. They keep threatening to bring out a new system all their own, but I haven't seen any signs that it's pending. I've tried some horrible hosts, some that turned out to be scams, and some that I couldn't cancel fast enough. Although not perfect, I would recommend site5.com as better than any other I've tried, and am in no hurry to find a replacement. Oh, and ahem.. I really hope I've put this in the right place. If not, so sorry!
Thanks Jayne for a great little review. Readers can find out more about Site5's shared hosting in the main directory. There is also another customer review by Ricky Lim posted elsewhere on this site.
I have used Fasthosts in the UK a number of times for a variety of websites. And quite frankly I can't think why I keep using them. They have a fantastic rating by all the mags and awards, and have some good experiences with them. But on the whole if a problem happens, it's like pulling teeth. You could wait on the phone for an hour or two to speak to an operator (even at 5 in the morning) or request help via email and wait for days or at times even weeks. I'm in the process of moving most of my hosting over to Mediatemple who although their own site is so slow, I've always had great service with. I first moved some of my clients to them a couple of years ago, and wish now I had done the rest.
Thanks for the information MrE This is exactly the sort of thing that helps to inform my visitors - there is nothing more valuable than user's first hand experiences, so thanks again for taking the time. I think any company that cannot respond to an email within, at worst, 24 hours is falling down on service. It's very difficult to know in advance how hosts perform in these areas and let's face it, it's when problems do occur that we most need a timely and effective response. Thanks also for the Mediatemple recommendation - if you have a link I'd be happy to list it here for you.
I think price definitely make a point here. Ussually a reputable host puts a higher price for a better quality.
